When drug charges are brought against Louisiana residents, they come with the threat of punishments such as probation, community service and/or jail time. For this reason, it is important that anyone accused of drug charges takes those allegations seriously while defending themselves in court. Fortunately, a lot can be done to improve an individual’s legal situation by employing various criminal defense techniques in the state of Louisiana.

Recently, two different drug-related arrests were made by the Washington, Louisiana Police Department. In one of the arrests, police accused a 16-year-old boy of drug possession. They also charged him with the intention of distributing narcotics classified as Schedule I Drugs. Police allege that the boy possessed 98 grams of pot inside his residence. They also found over $500 cash, which officers claim represented profits from the sale of drugs.

In the other arrest, officers allege that they were investigating a wooded area where someone complained that marijuana was being grown. Police claim that while they were there, a juvenile approached them. Police allege that he had 15 bags of pot in his pocket. They arrested him, booked him at the police department, and later released him to an adult.

Drug charges brought against juveniles in Louisiana are handled differently than drug charges brought against an adult. Juveniles have the opportunity to defend themselves against the allegations, but different laws and potential punishments apply to those under the age of 18 and any criminal defense will need to take those laws and punishments into account. Fortunately, there many different strategies that can be used on behalf of a teenager accused of drug crimes. In the best of outcomes, all the charges could be dropped or dismissed. In other successfully navigated cases, community service or probation in lieu of time spent in a juvenile detention center may be achieved.
