Those who are disabled on Louisiana highways can face certain dangers. Anything can happen while disabled on a roadside for a variety of different reasons. Unfortunately, police say that one woman is suspected of drunk driving with respect to a recent crash that led to a fatality.

The incident reportedly occurred one morning in early March. According to reports, a tow truck driver was attempting to assist a disabled motorist said to be parked on the shoulder of a Louisiana roadway. However, police say that a sports utility vehicle driven by a 48-year-old woman sideswiped the disabled pickup truck and struck the tow truck driver.

The SUV then struck a guardrail before overturning. Another vehicle then struck the SUV. While the drivers of both of these vehicles were transported to the hospital for treatment, the tow truck worker reportedly passed away at the scene. The driver of the SUV now faces multiple criminal charges, including vehicular homicide. While police believe impairment played a role in the accident, blood test results are still pending.

The loss of life in this accident is tragic. However, in order to gain a conviction of the criminal charges facing the woman, prosecutors in Louisiana must be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. In many cases, this is a difficult standard to meet. Many people accused of drunk driving are unsure of the best way to respond to the charges against them. Fortunately, a criminal defense attorney with experience with such cases can help them understand all of their options, preparing them to make informed decisions about their case.
