The process surrounding the criminal justice system is often complex, requiring a great deal of legal education and experience to successfully navigate. Unfortunately, most people facing criminal charges do not have the necessary knowledge to recognize unlawful treatment or respond to charges. For example, two people in Louisiana may be experiencing a great deal of uncertainty now that they face drug charges following an incident in a hospital.

Reports indicate that a man was a patient at a Louisiana hospital when a nurse claims she discovered him and his wife in the hospital room unconscious. According to the nurse, they had needles in their arms, and there were tourniquets present. As a result, the police were contacted and a search of the hospital room was conducted.

Police claim that they found several drugs in the room, including what they suspect is heroin, Clonazepam, Tramadol, Percocet and Oxycodone, as well as a variety of drug paraphernalia. The 34-year-old woman has since been arrested and charged with possession of drugs and paraphernalia. The man will be arrested once he is released from the hospital.

Because of most people’s lack of familiarity with the justice system, they are often unaware of their options following drug charges and other criminal accusations. In some cases, fighting the charges in court may be the most appropriate course of action while in others, accepting a plea deal may be a better choice. With the advice of an experienced criminal defense attorney, those in Louisiana facing criminal charges are often more prepared to make informed decisions about their case.
