Police officers have difficult jobs. They are often the object of public ridicule for actions they must make in split seconds, often while their lives are in danger. Unfortunately, this often means that when a law enforcement officer is suspected of a crime, consequences are often swift and harsh. In fact, a sheriff’s deputy in Louisiana has recently been arrested for drunk driving.

The incident that led to the man’s arrest happened at approximately 5 a.m. on a day in December. According to reports, the 22-year-old sheriff’s deputy had been on patrol duty for approximately four months. He was off duty at the time of the crash that led to his termination.

Police believe that he crashed his police car into a ditch before leaving the scene. Although investigators claim they determined that he was driving at the time of the crash, it is unclear how that determination was made. A Breathalyzer allegedly revealed that his blood alcohol content was barely over the legal limit. He has since been terminated and also charged with DWI, hit and run and careless operation.

Because of his job, many people may be quick to issue a judgment following criminal accusations. However, in all criminal cases, including those involving allegations of drunk driving, there must be sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Unfortunately, human error can cause inaccurate results when a Breathalyzer is administered. To help him address the charges against him, the former Louisiana deputy may hire an experienced criminal defense attorney to guide him through the process.
