Louisiana driver accused of drunk driving, assault

For those who have never been involved in a car accident, it may be difficult to predict how a person might respond. Unfortunately, with the adrenaline that is often associated with such a moment, a person recently involved in a crash could react unpredictably. In fact, a man in Louisiana is now accused of drunk driving after he allegedly failed to stop for an off-duty police officer.

The incident happened on a day in February. While reports indicate that a vehicle was being driven erratically, it is unclear who made those reports. However, an off-duty police officer in his personal vehicle claims that the vehicle struck his. The officer claims that the other driver failed to remain at the scene.

According to reports, the officer called 911 while he followed the vehicle until the driver turned into a subdivision and conducted a U-turn. The officer allegedly exited his vehicle at that time, identified himself and instructed the driver to pull over. Instead, the officer claims, the driver accelerated, driving in the former's direction; because he claims that he was afraid for his life, he fired a shot. The driver allegedly left the scene but was reportedly taken into custody after his vehicle broke down. He now faces several charges, including driving while intoxicated and hit and run.

Often in cases like this, an officer's version of events is the only one reported in the news media. However, the defendant in this case is presumed innocent unless there is sufficient evidence provided in court to prove that he is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. To help him fully understand the charges and evidence against him, the Louisiana man may choose to seek guidance from an attorney with experience responding to drunk driving allegations and other criminal charges.
