The drug problem in Louisiana continues to run rampant. In an effort to stem the tide the authorities may be stepping up the effort to bring those involved in distribution to justice. While this is a noble endeavor, anyone facing drug charges is entitled to a criminal defense. A person who has been indicted is presumed innocent until — and only if — proven guilty in court and beyond a reasonable doubt.

In a recent case in New Orleans, two brothers were indicted on charges that they allegedly conspired to distribute crack cocaine and heroin. One of the brothers was also charged with illegal possession of a weapon after previously being convicted of a felony. The charges carry a possibility of prison time ranging anywhere from five to 40 years.

The brother who was charged with illegal possession of a firearm could face a sentence of five years to life for the weapons charge. He could face up to 10 years for the distribution charge. Being involved in a criminal charge can create a very stressful situation for the individuals involved.

Persons in Louisiana facing indictments on drug charges may wish to seek the counsel of a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney. An experienced lawyer can review the facts of the case and advise his or her clients on the best legal avenues available to them based on the charges and the evidence. An experienced attorney can help his or her clients to understand their legal rights and advise them on the available options.
