Faced with drug charges, knowing one’s rights is vital

The battle against the opioid epidemic and other illegal drugs continues in Louisiana. A man was arrested in New Orleans following a police chase. The man pleaded guilty to numerous charges, including drug charges, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The man was identified as a suspect by authorities after an undercover operation that was carried out by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force. The suspect was pursued on foot and jumped into a canal in an effort to elude capture. A detective jumped into the canal to rescue him when the suspect cried out for help and stated he could not swim.

A person chased by police and then arrested on suspicion of drug charges may be scared, confused and unsure of his rights under the law. Anyone facing criminal charges is presumed innocent until — and only if — proven guilty and has a right to a criminal defense. This right is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Someone facing drug charges in Louisiana may wish to consult with a criminal defense attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can help a possibly confused and scared person to understand his or her position and the charges that have been filed. In some cases, a jury trial may present the best options and in others a plea deal may offer the better outcome. An experienced attorney can review the facts of the case and advise the client on the best legal path to pursue and will always work to achieve the best result.
