Divorce in the digital world

The dissolution of a marriage has always included the need for property division. In the 21st Century, it is not only physical and financial property one needs to be concerned about but digital property as well. Digital property can include a myriad of different items, and each must be carefully considered and dealt with when considering a divorce in Louisiana.

With so much of one's life residing on digital media, a careful inventory of digital property is necessary when one is considering a divorce. One of the most serious concerns will probably be around passwords and financial accounts. While they are certainly extremely important, there are many other aspects of the digital world that may need to be dealt with.

Social media accounts may need to be deleted, or, at the very least, the passwords should be changed. If devices are shared and one's partner is keeping a device, it may be a good idea to restore the device to factory specs with all records of passwords and data deleted. People should also keep in mind that partners are frequently familiar with each other's passwords. Even if the breakup is an amicable one, it is best to be cautious where one's digital life is concerned.

In the digital age, there is so much that is taken for granted with today's digital capabilities. A thorough inventory of one's digital accounts can be a critical first step to a digitally fresh start following a divorce in Louisiana. Consulting with an experienced family law attorney can be helpful in preparing for one's new life. A knowledgeable lawyer may be able to advise one regarding property division to help ensure an optimal outcome for all parties.
