The battle against heroin and other opioids is an ongoing one in Louisiana and all over the country. It is a multi-pronged battle being fought on many fronts. Law enforcement is endeavoring to slow the spread of the scourge by attempting to break up the many drug rings believed to be operating in the area. In a recent case, drug charges were brought against 19 suspected members of a heroin ring believed to be operating in New Orleans and in St. Tammany Parish.

The arrests were the result of an investigation lasting a number of months. Four of those arrested are believed to have been the ring leaders of the group. Another 20 people are sought in addition to the 19 that were arrested after search warrants were presented at 11 different locations around the area. The locations included both homes and businesses.

In addition to the arrests, officers reportedly recovered over half a kilo of heroin and opioid pills. A significant number of weapons were also allegedly seized. The accused face charges of criminal conspiracy related to illegal drug trafficking. Some will face charges for drug possession.

Facing drug charges can be a scary experience. Anyone accused of dealing in illegal drugs in Louisiana is entitled to legal representation and is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty in a court of law. A criminal defense attorney can apprise the accused of one’s rights and help to ensure that those rights are protected throughout the criminal justice process. A knowledgeable lawyer can also assist the client in understanding the legal options that may be available and pursuing the most favorable result.
